Memorial Office of Dietrich André Loeber

On the third floor of the Mentzendorff House there is a memorial office to Dietrich André Loeber (1923–2004), grandson of the last pre-war house owner, August Mentzendorff. Professor Dietrich André Loeber of the University of Kiel was a Baltic German lawyer, political scientist and historian. He actively supported Latvia’s independence efforts, became involved in the establishment of Latvia as a law-governed state, and in the co-operation of the Baltic States and their integration into Europe.

He considered his grandparents’ house, the Mentzendorff House, which had been restored in 1992, to be his second place of residence. With the greatest love D.A. Loeber supported the museum, was one of the initiators of the establishment of “Domus Rigensis”, the Latvian Baltic-German culture centre, which found its home in the Mentzendorff House.

In grateful memory of the professor, a cabinet has been created in the museum, where his personal belongings brought to Latvia by the Loeber family can be viewed.
