Exhibition “Medieval Mysteries following the footsteps of Hieronymus Bosch” – paintings by artist Signe Zuševica

The exhibition of paintings by artist Signe Zuševica “Medieval Mysteries following the footsteps of Hieronymus Bosch” is on view from October 18 to November 14 at the Exhibition Hall of  Mentzendorff’s House.

In the surreal mystical works of the Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch (1450-1516), artist Signe Zuševica has found a source of inspiration to look into the timeless processes of society and the human soul through the prism of painting.

“The works in this exhibition were created as a project during the Covid pandemic, when I decided to take a closer look at the work and personality of the late medieval genius Hieronymus Bosch. Of course, it is most understandable and convenient for a painter to do this by painting himself, trying to repeat the gentle brushstrokes and guess the symbolism of the sometimes frightening images. Keep in mind that symbolism today is quite different from the symbols used in the Middle Ages. That is how the works in this cycle came about,” tells Signe Zuševica.

The artist has been captivated by the world of images, themes and symbols of Hieronymus Bosch, resulting in more than 20 paintings – interpretations of Bosch’s work, which are now on display at the exhibition.

Artist Signe Zuševica has been working in the painting studio “Umbra” since 1990, where she has cultivated her painting skills under the guidance of painter Māra Zītare, working in the technique of watercolor and oil painting.

Since the passing of painter Māra Zītare, the studio “Umbra” has been headed by painter Agnija Ģērmane. The most active painters of “Umbra” also organize solo exhibitions, which are an incentive for a new step in the creative process, emphasizing the individual abilities of the personality and finding satisfaction in the complex path of art.

The exhibition of paintings by Signe Zuševica “Medieval Mysteries following the footsteps of Hieronymus Bosch” is a vivid, thought-provoking message.
