Insight into the photo album of the photo salon “Hebensperger & Co” – the mirror of the lost beautiful era

The Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation holds a black-and-white photo portfolio album of the company “Hebensperger & Co” with 19th-20th cent. views of Riga and resort towns of Latvia.

The turn of the 19th century is a time of Riga’s intensive growth when the city acquires and consolidates the features that we are largely familiar with and are proud of today. On the pages of the album these changes in the visual image of Riga appear in all their glory. The newly created Bastejkalns, the greenery along the City Canal and the development of the Boulevard Circle with theatres, hotels and many educational institutions. Industrial objects – the railway station, the Gasworks – and notable architectural monuments are popular objects of photography and symbols of pride.

The photos in the “Hebensperger & Co” album offer a journey in time that conveys a momentary experience of the capital city’s ambience 120 years ago.
